Cocktail Cabin

The idea

Most drinks sites are written for a bar. They assume a wall of bottles, a jigger and somebody who knows what a rinse is. Cocktail Cabin starts somewhere else - the kitchen shelf - and answers one question: given what I already have, what can I make tonight?

What it does

121 cocktails, 25 of them alcohol-free, every one of them written out with its measures and its full method. Around that sit the four things that make a recipe collection useful:

  • Search by ingredient. Type what is actually in the fridge - gin, lemon, sugar - and the list narrows to the drinks that can be made from it.
  • Browse the shelves. Spirits, liqueurs, juices, syrups and garnishes are catalogued like ingredients, so "something with Campari in it" is a place to go rather than a search to phrase.
  • My Bar. Tick off the bottles you own and the site keeps them, which turns a catalogue into a shelf and makes the first question answerable in one screen.
  • Close matches. A drink one ingredient away from being possible is more useful than one four ingredients away, and the list says which is which before you click.

The direction

Dark, warm and lit from one side, like a bar after service. The accent is a neon pink that only ever lands on the things a reader can act on, and the display type is a high-contrast serif doing the job a bar's own lettering does: it makes the name of a drink feel like a name rather than a row in a table.

Everything else stays quiet. Recipes are set as lists, because a recipe is a list; the photographs are small and honest; and the whole filter panel folds away behind one line until a reader asks for it. The search field sits directly under the headline, because on this site the search field is the product.

What it is

One address per drink, per spirit and per ingredient, so a recipe can be linked to, shared and found by a search engine without a second structure being invented for it. The catalogue is the site's own data rather than a page per cocktail, which is why 121 recipes, 20 base spirits and a filter on what is in your bar all agree with each other.
